Does the polarity of a magnet really matter?
In biomagnetic therapy, the direction of a magnet’s polarity is not a minor technical detail; it is a fundamental factor in understanding how magnetic fields interact with the body’s electromagnetic environment.
Decades of scientific observation and practical experience have associated North polarity with regulatory, calming, and balance-supportive effects when applied correctly and consistently.
Understanding how these polarities are identified and applied is essential for the responsible use of magnetic therapy.
Scientific Foundations of the Sierra Approach
The functional polarity framework used in biomagnetic therapy developed from experimental observations conducted in biological systems.
In 1936, Albert Roy Davis documented that the two poles of a magnet produced different responses in living organisms. His experiments with plants and animals showed that each polarity generated distinct and repeatable biological effects.
These observations were later expanded by Dr. Ralph U. Sierra beginning in 1969 through experimental work conducted at PR Scientific Research Lab, Inc. in Puerto Rico.
Within this experimental framework, a functional classification was adopted in which:
• North is identified as negative polarity
• South is identified as positive polarity
This classification was based on observed biological responses rather than solely on naming conventions.
Since 1985, this has been the approach — my Sierra approach.
Verification Before Labels
From its beginnings, the Sierra approach has emphasized verification and measurement of polarity rather than terminology or commercial labeling.
Compasses can help determine magnetic orientation, but by themselves they do not define therapeutic application. The determination of functional polarity has historically been based on observed, repeatable, and measurable biological effects.
Over decades of practical application, these principles have been used consistently both in clinical environments and in everyday use of therapeutic magnets.
I have used magnets marked as North according to the Sierra approach since childhood. This was not an occasional practice, but a continuous application over decades.
I often smile when this topic arises. If our identification of polarity had been incorrect, I likely would not be here writing this article today, because for decades I have placed toward my body what others might call the “wrong pole.”
Yet the results have consistently confirmed the opposite. To the best of my knowledge, there are very few people in the world—if any—who have applied magnets with the consistency that I have for nearly six decades.
This continuity has allowed the effects of magnetic polarity to be observed and confirmed across a wide range of situations.
It has also guided the development and application of the magnetic products created under Dr. Sierra Magnets.
Identifying the Poles of a Magnet
To apply magnetic therapy correctly, the poles of a magnet must first be identified.
A compass can serve as a reference instrument to observe magnetic orientation, since its needle points toward the Earth’s magnetic North.
The complete process for properly identifying and verifying magnetic polarity is explained in my book Beyond the Power of the Magnet.
Once a magnet has been identified, it can be used as a reference to verify other magnets through attraction or repulsion:
• like poles repel
• opposite poles attract
This procedure allows polarity to be identified even when instrumentation is not immediately available.
Clarity in Magnet Labeling
In many commercial products, magnets are identified using colors such as red or green. However, these visual codes do not always guarantee that polarity has been properly verified.
In some cases, manufacturers apply the same color to large batches of products without confirming the actual polarity of each magnet.
A clear example can be seen in magnetic brushes available on the market, where color markings are often applied as a design convention rather than as a verified indication of polarity.
For this reason, within the Sierra approach polarity is verified before application, rather than assumed from color or labeling.
When polarity is assumed rather than verified, inconsistency becomes inevitable.
Our objective is simple: that those who use Dr. Sierra Magnets can feel confident that polarity has been carefully verified and that the instructions reflect the correct application of the Sierra approach.
Verified Polarity and Observed Biological Effect
Through instrumental verification and clinical observation, distinct biological responses have consistently been associated with North (–) and South (+) polarity.
Negative polarity (therapeutic North or Bio-North)
- Produces calming, sedative, and regulatory effects.
- Magnetic stabilization supporting functional balance.
- This is the polarity placed toward the skin.

Positive polarity (therapeutic South or Bio-South)
- Produces stimulating, expansive, and activating effects.
- Magnetic stimulation supporting physiological activation.
- This polarity is generally oriented away from the body.
As shown in the image above, when measured with a magnetometer or gaussmeter:
- negative polarity (North) deflects the needle toward the left
- positive polarity (South) deflects the needle toward the right
These responses occur independently of the magnet’s color or commercial labeling.
Final Perspective
Magnetic therapy requires three fundamental elements:
verification, identification, and correct application of polarity.
First the pole is verified.
Then it is identified and labeled.
And only then is it applied.
Applying a magnet without knowing its polarity is not therapy—it is experimentation.
In practice, magnets can also be found in the market that are incorrectly marked or whose polarity has not been clearly verified. For this reason, within the Sierra Method polarity is always verified before application.
These concepts form part of a broader educational framework that I continue to develop and share through lectures, writings, and educational programs on biomagnetic wellness.
I share these observations as part of the work that has guided my practice since 1985 and that continues to form part of the Sierra Method.
Knowledge awakens… but daily application transforms.

Dr. Irma I. Sierra
